Over 12 years ago I was looking to source high quality, local and gorgeous toiletries for the bedrooms in our soon to be opened new boutique hotel – staying at a friend’s pub, the Peat Spade Inn, my search was fulfilled, as it was here that I first discovered the divine smelling, Long Barn Lavender range.
I have always loved lavender. In fact my garden at home is filled with as many varieties of the plants as I can source; I find the scent of lavender to be a very soothing and calming fragrance and I love discovering the depths of fragrance, the differing citrus and other hues that make lavender unique, depending on which part of the country you source it from and generally the diverse shape, size and colours of the plants, be they white, pink, lilac, blue or deepest purple; I never stop being beguiled by it and visiting lavender fields is my idea of heaven!
Having gone on to meet Richard Norris and Jane Marsden, the founders of Long Barn, I knew I had made the right choice of product for the hotel and the right company to form a friendship with. I admire Richard and Jane’s passion, their tenacity and their ethos. Twelve years on we are happily still using Long Barn in our bedrooms and throughout ‘Spot’. We stock their fantastic products in our gift shop and guests continue to remark on the top quality of the products, the packaging and the smell. One of our younger guests, Ben, on arriving at ‘Spot’ for the first time after its recent transformation said to his mum, “Thank goodness… it still smells the same as it always has”…. and indeed it does… the place still smells of gorgeous Long Barn lavender!
Over the years we have watched with pleasure as Long Barn has grown in popularity and Richard and Jane have seen their plans and dreams come to fruition as the company has expanded. Located in Alresford, not far from Winchester, Long Barn is housed on a site surrounded by lavender fields and offers a café and home and garden store and is a firm fixture in the bustling market town.
Long Barn was built upon Richard’s love of lavender and that love remains at the root of what Jane, Richard and their team create. A true love and a passion for being growers and distillers of English lavender, continuing a heritage of farming methods so little used today is the ethos of what makes Long Barn special. The lavender is grown on their Hampshire farm. The fields are farmed without the use of chemicals. The oil is distilled in July and August, most often on the same day as being cut, using a centuries old, traditional steam method and that is what makes Long Barn unique – the commitment to heritage, tradition and to quality… and we are delighted to work with such genuinely lovely people, who share our passion and attention to quality and detail.
Visit ‘Spot’ to enjoy their range products we have to offer and be calmed and soothed by the gorgeous smell of the lavender that permeates throughout, and the Long Barn website is very much worth a visit!
Until next time.
