Autumn Arrives … Our Favourite Time Of Year

Autumn arrives … our favourite time of year

‘Haust’, the Old Norse word meaning “to gather” – ‘À la rentrée’ or ‘the return’ in France – ‘Risshuu’ meaning the first day of Autumn in Japan. It is a special season wherever you may be, and Autumn is our favourite time of year here at the Spot.

Why? Well in the Forest the changing leaves, wildlife busy preparing for the winter months and local people bustling making sure we are ready for the crisp frosts and snow to keep warm.

There is an ambiance of expectation – and not forgetting ‘Pannage’, the practice of releasing domestic pigs into a Forest, going back to the time of William the Conqueror, who founded The New Forest in 1079. The pigs are released to eat fallen acorns, beechmast and other nuts. Green acorns in particular are poisonous to the New Forest ponies and cattle which roam the Forest. So you never know who you might meet as you drive or explore nearby!

A time of change …

Autumn of course is a time of change, and we have seen so many of those here at the Spot since we opened in March. 6 months on we are seeing lots of new faces, of all ages from both close by and across the world, and we love to meet and chat to you all. We are creating new recipes and dishes all the time, and working with some of the best producers in the UK. Many are based locally, to provide some wonderful new Deli items and gifts, and yes – Christmas isn’t too far away!

Our Autumn room rates also provide excellent value for the staycationer, friends or family, the business traveller or if visiting on holiday from further afield.

Looking ahead

We hope to see you soon as we enter the next phase of journey. And we wanted to leave you with a lovely review this week, which we thought rather summed up what we are working so hard to achieve – a wonderful all-round experience when you visit.

Neil Wilson, our ‘Marketing Man’ and Guest Blogger for Spot in the Woods!

“My husband and I visited Spot in the Woods today for breakfast. It is a charming house surrounded by trees with a terrace and garden. We were made very welcome and attended to very quickly. The setting and ambiance is gorgeous. The food outstanding. My husband had a full breakfast which he said was brilliant, while I had scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, advocado and toast, the smoked salmon had a really delicious taste, the eggs a deep yellow richness and such a tasty and advocado. Absolutely delicious. All quality locally sourced produce. There is also a deli shop on site. They also offer bed and breakfast. It has a homely atmosphere. They were a steady flow of customers. We will definitely return In the future. Well done!”
