GERARD BASSET OBE, MW, MS, MBA, MSc 7 March 1957 – 16 January 2019. Gerard Basset, one of the world’s greatest wine professionals, has passed away surrounded by his family.
He had fought a brave battle against cancer of the oesophagus since 2017. Gerard was the first and remains the only individual to have held the excruciatingly challenging Master of Wine qualification simultaneously with the Master Sommelier, MBA Wine Business and MSc from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine. The crowning glory of his career came in April 2010 when he won the World Sommelier Championship, cementing his extraordinary domination of the industry.
This was further augmented on receiving the OBE in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to hospitality. Born and raised in France, Gerard originally trained as a chef, but embarked on a career as a sommelier when he moved to the UK in the 1980s. It was not long before his prodigious talent came to the attention of the wine trade with award wins for the UK Sommelier of the Year, Best International Sommelier for French Wines and Best Sommelier of Europe in quick succession.
Parallel to his competition success was a growing business empire including Hotel du Vin, of which he was a founding partner, and TerraVina, which more recently became Spot in the Woods as the business was adapted to his state of health and desire to be at home in the New Forest. He will perhaps be best remembered for mentoring and training a generation of young sommeliers who sought out his expertise and guidance to launch their careers. His wife, Nina, said, “Whilst we are devastated to have to say goodbye to Gerard for the last time, we draw strength from the kind messages that we have already received from the many people whose lives he touched. He fought a brave battle against cancer and we are comforted that he died at home surrounded by his family and that he is now at peace.

Spring is one of our favourite times of year here at Spot in the Woods and our boutique Bed & Breakfast, Kitchen Café and Deli, and we celebrated our 1st Anniversary at the start of March.
The people are what help to make Spot in the Woods so special. When you arrive our friendly front of house colleagues, Row, Marie, Ceara, Ana and Annika will greet you with a smile.
Our talented chefs, Gavin, Lucy, Moyra and their team are on hand to create something tasty in our bustling and buzzing Kitchen Café. You can see them at work in our open kitchen creating your next delicious dish! Andrew and our Kitchen Porter team work so hard to keep us spick and span. Lin and the housekeeping team work tirelessly to maintain the highest levels of cleanliness.
We are seeking additional members for our Kitchen Café team for the spring and summer, with lots of enthusiasm and willingness to work in a fast-paced but friendly environment, as well as part-time colleagues to join our Housekeeping team – hours are flexible BUT will include weekends, and own transport is essential. We support 2 amazing local charities: Barrett’s Wessex, who’s aim is to provide support for those with oesophageal cancer in Southampton, Wessex and beyond and Forest Forge Theatre company based in Ringwood, who create wonderful performances for all to enjoy.

Spot in the Woods is so much more than just a kitchen café and boutique bedrooms…. It is a lifestyle experience. Because of this we have many lovely items that are showcased throughout “Spot” available to purchase to take home, in both our shop and Deli.
We champion local artisan crafts people, artists and designers including Longbarn, Summerdown Mint, Sandra Binney, Sue Tinkler Art Glass and Nomad Originals, as well as locally made jams and chutneys, oils and dressings and a range of Lehmann glassware. Pop in to enjoy a bite to eat, a delicious Mozzo coffee, Moyra’s homemade cake, or glass of wine on our sunny terrace (heaters and blankets are available!).
After 10 years of running Hotel TerraVina, Nina and Gerard have made an exciting new beginning, creating Spot in the Woods. This new venture has been created to give our valued customers a wonderful homely and social experience, but not forgetting the exceptional service and special treats you’ve come to know us for.
